Searching Prismic documents

Is the search useful in prismic.
Even if I enter exact document name but in lowercase letters the document wont show at all.
I cant show you the search results because I am using prismic for company so it is confidential
But what do search do? What does it search. It doesnt search the document name at all
For example:
I have a document called "Company Storage | Variant" if i search company storage it even wont show me document in top 10 search results

Hello @asreearm1729

Thanks for reaching out to us.

We have been already discussed this in the following thread and have been tracking it as a feature request:

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks,
Priyanka

the search has been updated now, but no longer searches in the document content, so basically it is impossible to find a document you don't know anything about. Search UID doesn't help. I think this was a step in the wrong direction.

I want to edit a document of which I know the UID and can't find it in the documents list. Completely unusable dashboard.

Hi Juan,

Thank you for your feedback regarding the new search functionality. We understand how important the previous search experience was to your workflow, and we appreciate you taking the time to outline the specific features you found valuable.

Currently, the new search prioritizes results based on document names. However, we recognize that this might not fully meet your needs and we’re actively gathering feedback like yours and are already working on improving the search experience to better align with how users interact with their content.

The new search works on partial word search, so if you begin writing parts of the title you should be able to find you content easier.

Your input helps us shape these improvements, and we’re committed to making the search more efficient and user-friendly. Thank you again for sharing your insights, and for your understanding as we continue to enhance the system.

Thanks.

The new search is terrible and takes away the ability to search on anything but the document title. I have a client that uses "documents" for webinars and the need to be able to search on all of the webinar data fields (presenter name, date, method, etc.) and that ability has been removed. They host dozens of webinars by the same title so a search result of 20+ documents with the same name is not helpful to them.

We understand how it can be challenging to rely on titles alone for document identification, especially in a multi-team, multi-region setup. Your feedback on using fields other than just titles to differentiate documents is well noted, and we’re committed to making sure the search experience supports your needs.

We want to assure you that we are actively planning to address regressions such as restoring the functionality of searching by UID, sorting by modified date, and displaying document type and status are priorities for us. While we don’t have an exact timeline to share right now, our team is working to bring these features back as efficiently as possible.

We appreciate your patience as we work on resolving this, and we’ll keep you updated with any developments. Thank you for your continued trust in Prismic, and please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any more concerns.

Hey @Phil, is it not better to reverse back the search functionality to its original state which wasn't ideal but far better than the current solution, until you add further improvements to the new search? I also find the new search impossible to use, even though I have a lot of experience with Prismic and how the project is structured. Now imagine the content marketers are struggling even more without the same domain knowledge

Hi Kris,

Unfortunately it’s not possible for any users to revert to the previous search tool as this involved a databased migration which cannot be reverted.

We're working hard to improve the functionality and we acknowledge there was a breakdown in our usual deployment process which would have mitigated some of your frustrations. We promise that this has been had as a discussion and we are committed to making sure it won't happen again.

Thanks for you understanding.

hi Phil, thanks for your reply.

To add more context, my team is being constantly reached out by content editors asking us for help finding documents.

In most cases we don't know the titles of the documents. The Prismic title of documents has never been a required field and auto populates from the document content. If I don't add anything to the document, the Prismic title becomes "Untitled 2024-09-24T11:25:54.488Z".

Good luck trying to find that document in 6 months.

Further more, we have pages, that have changed the title over time, and the Prismic title remained the old one. So now the only way to find that document is to know the old title, which new team members of course don't know,

What I meant about a step in the wrong direction, is that the Search feature now relies on a field that was not very important in the past nor was it required, so old content becomes almost impossible to find.

This feature should've been A/B tested.

We agree we failed in this rollout and are actively planning to address regressions, such as restoring the functionality of searching by UID, sorting by modified date, and displaying document type and status are priorities for us. While we don’t have an exact timeline to share right now, our team is working to bring these features back as efficiently as possible.

Our support team worked on a temporary workaround to help you search by UID while the team re-implements this. Hopefully, this will speed up your workflow while we work on this.

I agree with the comments, the search is unusable for us now.

@Phil please convey to leadership that we need a timeline on this fix asap. Our clients (who are the content teams) are actively planning their 2025 budgets and they are asking when this will be addressed. If we can't give them a definite answer, they will start setting aside budget to replace Prismic.

Hi Everyone,

Quick update: In the next few weeks, we'll be improving the search functionality, starting with filters for things like author, publish status, last updated, etc.

Then, hopefully, no long after that, searching by UID.

Once I have more information I'll update you here.

Thanks.
