Prismic API Limits and CDN Bandwidth explained: FAQ Guide

Here are some predicted questions to help you understand our API Limits, CDN Bandwidth and Plan Upgrades.

If needed, you can also check out our optimisation guide.

What causes CDN or API usage limits?

Answer:
CDN usage limits are based on the total bandwidth consumed by assets (like images) and JSON data requested from Prismic's servers. Both types of data contribute to your overall usage.

What happens if I exceed the limits on API calls, CDN bandwidth, or locales?

Answer:
If limits are exceeded, monthly plans are upgraded for that month, and yearly plans are upgraded after three consecutive months. CDN overages are billed at $0.20/GB. For locales, you will be upgraded the following month. Free users may have repositories locked if limits are repeatedly exceeded.

Can customers optimize to stay on the same plan?

Answer:
Yes, customers can optimize and manually downgrade if they go under the limits. Monthly users are upgraded after exceeding limits for one month, while yearly users are upgraded after three consecutive months.

What are the hard limits?

Answer:
Hard limits force an automatic plan upgrade, while soft limits allow for overage charges (e.g., $0.20/GB for bandwidth). Limits on API and CDN usage vary by plan.

What happens if customers downgrade their plan?

Answer:
The plan changes immediately, and any credits are applied to the next invoice.

Does every individual image or asset count as an API call?

Answer:
Yes, each image or asset requested through the API counts as a call.

Does the /api/v2 endpoint count towards bandwidth if cached?

Answer:
Yes, even cached items count toward bandwidth since the data is still transferred.

Can Prismic share the IP addresses that perform requests to my API endpoint?

Answer:
No, Prismic cannot share IP addresses as they are considered personal data under GDPR.

Does the Prismic Migration API count toward API call limits?

Answer:
Not currently for pricing purposes, though it may be considered in the future.

When did the pricing changes take effect?

Answer:
The pricing changes took effect on January 8th, 2024.

What are the new limits, and how can I monitor them?

Answer:
Limits vary by plan. You can monitor API and CDN usage in Settings > Usage Dashboard and locales in Settings > Translations & Locales.

How were the limits for API calls, CDN bandwidth, and locales determined?

Answer:
The limits were set based on user behavior patterns to balance affordability and resource usage. Because we care about affordability these are still the most generous in the market.

How can I upgrade my plan if I need more API calls, CDN bandwidth, or locales?

Answer:
You can upgrade via Settings > Plans & Billing. For Platinum or Enterprise plans, contact Prismic for assistance.

Will these limits affect the performance or availability of my website?

Answer:
No, these limits ensure optimal performance without affecting the availability of your API.

How have the pricing changes affected yearly plans?

Answer:
For yearly plans, the new pricing applies at renewal. Plans are upgraded automatically if limits are exceeded for three consecutive months.

Where can I find more detailed information about these changes?

Answer:
You can find more details on the Prismic pricing page.
